Why Our Aluminum Slat Fencing Is Built for California’s Wildfire Risk

In California, wildfire is not a someday risk. Every fire season, wind-driven embers travel well ahead of the flames and land on whatever sits against a house: mulch, a woodpile, a wood fence. The January 2025 Los Angeles fires destroyed more than 16,000 structures and killed 31 people, and many of those homes caught from the outside in. Those fires also showed this isn’t just a hillside or rural problem. Fire moved through established city neighborhoods, house to house and fence to fence.

Most California fences are wood, and most of them run straight up to the house. That makes the fence one of the largest pieces of fuel on the property, attached right where it can do the most damage. QuickScreen horizontal aluminum slat fencing for California homes takes that fuel away without asking you to give up the look: it is non-combustible, it has the clean, modern lines California homes are built around, and it is engineered for Santa Ana winds.

If you’re looking for a fire-resistant alternative to a wood fence, here’s what actually matters for a California property.

What Wildfire Season Does to a Fence

Embers
Embers ride the wind ahead of a fire front and pile up wherever they find a corner or a gap. The base of a fence and the gaps between wood boards are exactly those places. A wood fence doesn’t need to be touched by flame to catch. It only needs a handful of embers to settle in.

The fence-to-house fuse
A wood fence that ties into the side of a house works like a fuse. Once it catches, fire runs along the boards straight to the siding, eaves and windows. Fire researchers have recommended a non-combustible fence, typically metal or masonry, for the last 5 feet before the house for years.

Santa Ana winds
The same winds that drive California’s worst fires also load up a fence. A solid wood fence catches the full force, and posts loosened by a windy season lean and crack.

Coastal air
Along the coast, salt air goes to work on steel hardware and on cheap finishes. Steel gates and hinges rust, and low-grade coatings chalk and fade.

Aluminum answers all four. It can’t burn, it can’t rust, and in the QuickScreen system it is engineered for the wind.

A Non-Combustible, Fire-Resistant Fence, Proven on Camera

Aluminum is a non-combustible material. It will not ignite, it adds no fuel to a fire, and it will not carry flame along a fence line toward a house the way a wood fence does.

We put that to the test. In our fire test video, we hold a torch to a wood fence and a QuickScreen panel side by side. The wood ignites in seconds. The QuickScreen aluminum comes through untouched.

That matters on two fronts. Close to the house, a non-combustible fence removes the fuse. Along the property line, it means your fence isn’t one more thing feeding a fire through the neighborhood.

A Look That Fits California Homes

Fire safety only helps if you want the fence in the first place. QuickScreen is a fence people choose for the look and get the fire protection with it.

  • Clean horizontal lines that suit modern California architecture, from mid-century homes to new stucco builds.
  • No visible hardware. Slats drop into the posts with a patented friction-fit system and snap-in aluminum spacers, so the face stays clean.
  • Your choice of privacy, from fully solid to open spacing for light and airflow, or open on top and private below.
  • Wide or narrow slats, in 5.91″ and 2.56″ profiles.
  • A finish that holds up. QuickScreen uses an AkzoNobel Interpon D2000 powder coat to the AAMA 2604 architectural standard, with a 20-year warranty on the finish and a limited lifetime warranty on the aluminum.

A wood fence starts graying and checking within a couple of seasons. QuickScreen needs an occasional rinse. No staining, no sealing, no board replacement.

What California’s Zone 0 Rules Say About Fences

The state is heading the same direction. California’s “Zone 0” is the ember-resistant zone within 5 feet of a home, added to the state’s defensible space law in 2020. The new rules would apply to buildings throughout State Responsibility Areas and to homes in locally designated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones.

On August 19, 2026, the State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection adopted Zone 0 regulations. For fences, the adopted text says:

  • No new combustible fences or gates within 5 feet of the house.
  • A 5-foot non-combustible section where a fence or gate attaches to the house or comes within about a foot of it.
  • Existing fences can stay and be repaired. Replacing combustible fences and gates attached to the house falls in a later phase, roughly three to five years after the rule takes effect.
  • Zone 0 only covers the first 5 feet, so fences farther from the house are not part of these rules.

As of October 2026, the rules are not yet in force. The Board withdrew the package from state review on September 8 for technical edits and has not announced a new date. Check with your local fire authority for what applies to your address, since some cities and counties already enforce their own versions.

Our view: Zone 0 isn’t the reason to choose a non-combustible fence. The fire risk to your home is the same whether or not the rule is in force. But if it does take effect as written, a QuickScreen fence already meets the direction it sets.

QuickScreen vs. Wood vs. Vinyl vs. Wrought Iron

Feature QuickScreen Aluminum Wood Vinyl / PVC Wrought Iron / Steel
Burns? No; non-combustible Yes Plastic; melts and burns No
Look Modern horizontal, architectural Warm, but grays and checks Traditional; reads as plastic up close Traditional / classic
Privacy Fully adjustable, solid to open Solid or picket Solid or picket, fixed at purchase Open pickets only
Upkeep Occasional rinse Stain or seal every few years Low, but UV makes it brittle Rust treatment and repainting
Wind Up to 170 mph (4″ HD posts) Varies; posts rot and lean Varies; steel inserts common Varies by manufacturer
Finish Warranty 20 years on the powder coat None Varies Varies

Wrought iron is the only other option on this list that won’t burn, but it gives you no privacy and needs ongoing rust treatment, especially near the coast. Wood and vinyl give you privacy but both are fuel. QuickScreen is the only one of the four that is non-combustible, private and modern at the same time. A Note for Architects, Builders, Landscapers and Fence Contractors

California homeowners are asking about fire-safe fencing now, and most of them want something that doesn’t look like a compromise. Being the contractor who can explain the risk accurately, and then show them a modern fence that answers it, wins jobs.

  • Lead with the risk and the look. Zone 0 is worth explaining, but the rule isn’t in force yet. The fire risk and the design are the reasons that close.
  • Quote the transition and the full run side by side. Gates and the short returns where a fence meets the house are the most common starting point. Many homeowners upgrade the whole run once they see the two side by side.
  • Price aluminum to win. Aluminum material costs more than wood, so applying your usual wood markup can price you out of the job. A leaner margin on material, with labor priced properly, closes more work.
  • Install faster. QuickScreen’s friction-fit assembly needs no welding and no visible screws, which means more jobs per week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is aluminum fencing fire-resistant?
Yes. Aluminum is a non-combustible material. It will not ignite, adds no fuel to a fire, and will not carry flame along a fence line. If your property is in a designated fire hazard severity zone, confirm material and assembly requirements with your local building department or fire authority before ordering.

What is the best fire-resistant alternative to a wood fence?
For privacy and a modern look, a horizontal aluminum slat fence like QuickScreen. It is non-combustible like wrought iron, but it can be fully private, and it doesn’t rust or need repainting. Vinyl is not a fire-resistant option: it melts and burns.

Is California’s Zone 0 rule in effect?
Not as of October 2026. The Board of Forestry adopted the rules on August 19, 2026, then withdrew them from state review on September 8 for technical edits. No effective date has been set. Some cities and counties enforce their own versions, so check locally.

Do I have to replace my existing wood fence?
Under the adopted Zone 0 text, existing fences can stay and be repaired. The section within 5 feet of the house, where a fence attaches, would need to become non-combustible in a later phase. Fences more than 5 feet from the house are not covered by Zone 0.

Will an aluminum fence hold up to Santa Ana winds?
QuickScreen’s heavy-duty 4″ post system is engineered to ASCE 7-16 for basic wind speeds up to 170 mph. What you can build depends on height, post spacing and site exposure, so confirm your configuration with your engineer or building department. Our wind rating guide has the full table.

Can I just replace the section near my house?
Yes. QuickScreen slats cut to length on site, so a 5-foot return or a single gate is a straightforward job. Many homeowners start there and match the rest of the run later.
